The mission on this association is to raise the visibility, viability and Internet reach of online Black radio. New media is for many people still relatively new and therefore it is still evolving. Contributing to the new media diversification we see online, free and low cost start up platforms like Ning, Blog Talk Radio and Talkshoe, African Americans have an opportunity to lay the foundations for the future of Black media. Much has been made about the digital divide that exist between low income African Americans and the rest of the population but according to recent studies, both innovations and applications for cell phones and hand held devices helped to drastically shrink the digital divide when it comes to Internet access. Presidents Obama's Technology Agenda aims to address the digital divide and media diversity.
Some bullet points of the Obama Administration's Technology Agenda are:
" Encourage Diversity in Media Ownership: Encourage diversity in the ownership of broadcast media, promote the development of new media outlets for expression of diverse viewpoints, and clarify the public interest obligations of broadcasters who occupy the nation's spectrum.
" Deploy Next-Generation Broadband: Work towards true broadband in every community in America through a combination of reform of the Universal Service Fund, better use of the nation's wireless spectrum, promotion of next-generation facilities, technologies and applications, and new tax and loan incentives. America should lead the world in broadband penetration and Internet access.
If Black America wants to insure its place in the future of media, the time to build platforms, associations and relationships is now.
